WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE SAFER FROM FIRE?
Dr Christian Morgner: Multiculturalism and Fire Incidents

Christian Morgner from the University of Leicester wants to address a neglected area of demographic research on fire incidents, namely, the role of cultural diversity and integration as a barrier to adoption of fire safe behaviours.

His previous research has demonstrated that less integrated communities are more likely to experience a higher frequency of fires, particularly severe fires, than well integrated majority communities; so, he applied to the Fire Service Research and Training Trust for a Research Project Grant.

This new study, supported by the Trust, will focus on the Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities in Leicestershire, one of the UK’s most multicultural counties to try and find out why some people are safer from fire than others.

We asked Christian, what made you approach the Trust?
The Trust’s agenda makes a clear commitment to questions and issues that align with my research project. I liked that there was a mutual agenda that could support each other.

How was the process of applying for a grant?
I enjoyed the personal approach. All applications are labour intense, but most application systems have become very anonymous. However, I liked that there was a possibility to personally consult with someone from the Trust, I received phone calls with follow-up questions and personal guidance how to proceed with the application. That’s very different from receiving a standard email that simply says that you have been successful or unsuccessful. It shows that the Trust cares about its applicants.

Tell us what you are looking to achieve with the grant
I intend to provide tangible solutions to the questions of equality and diversity. Equality and diversity have become central policy concerns, but to this date there is very little knowledge on the circumstances that create inequality and exclusion with regards to fire safety. The research wants to address this gap and work collaboratively with members of the general public and the fire service on possible solutions.

Would you recommend any other individuals to apply?
Definite, yes; it’s been a pleasure working with the Trust on this application. I appreciated the help and personal support throughout.
